Four Steps to Focus

June 9th, 2009

Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.

-M. Scott Peck

Time Management is one of the three top issues that surface in my coaching with top executive leaders. Here is a remarkably simple and effective time management technique.

  1. Collect a 3/5 card, a timer, and a rock, crystal or some other symbol of focus for you.
  2. On the card, write: “For the next 60 minutes, I am focusing on __________ with this outcome in mind ________________.”
  3. Do what you have to do to avoid distractions. Let the phone, email, etc. go unanswered. Put a sign on your door.  Have a blank paper handy to jot down the things that come into mind that you want to handle later.
  4. Set the timer for 60 minutes and then dig in.

This simple technique is remarkably effective.
