The Value of Competition

This is a time-honored tip: Create an atmosphere of healthy competition to get results.

I find the artful use of competition to be a great motivator. Example: I have been working with a client for months on a certain project. He was just not following through – not because he didn’t want to, but because he struggles to manage his time well. The office began tracking the progress of the several clients I was working with by posting results. In a matter of one week, the client in question completed all tasks required to get his project up to date.

Yes, we still have to work on prioritization so that it is easier for him to schedule and execute the important and urgent tasks as well as the important and not urgent tasks. But, this boost of productivity on his part gave him some much needed momentum and pride.

Bottom line: the use of healthy competition and public tracking of results is a powerful tool when used correctly.
